The Vanising Hitchhiker--- This is the most heard urban legend. A classic. It starts out a man or a couple are driving through when they see a young woman walking on the side of the road. They pull over and she hops in. When they get to the young woman's house she is not in the car. So the man or couple go to the door and knock. The young woman's parents answer the door and tell them that their daughter is dead and that it was her ghost. There are many, many different versions to this story but they all have the same consept of the disapearing and the young woman being dead. One version, the young woman is given a sweater by the couple and when she disapears they go to her gave and find the sweater on or beside the gavestone. High Beams--- This legend isn't as old as the Vanishing Hitchhiker, but still old enough to be a legend. I starts, a girl is going home from an event at her school. She lives out of town so uses a car to get back and forth. Well, she gets on the road and notices a car behind hers driving very close. She just think he's going her way till she turns into a road few people live on. Suddenly, the man behind her turns on his high beams. She goes faster. So does he. He turns his high beams on again and leaves them on. When the girl gets home the man pulls up into her driveway behind her. She jumps out and calls to her parents to call the police. When the police arrive they pulled the man out of his car. But he points to her car and tells them to arrest the man in her car. They check her car and sure enough there is a guy with a knife crouched down behind the girl's seat. The man who followed her told her that he saw the guy get into her car with the knife. So he followed. And when he saw the guy get up to stab the girl he turned on his high beams so the guy would have to get down so he wouldn't be seen.
The Babysitter--- This is also a newer legend. But still has its tingle of terror. I've never heard but one version. And this is it. Everyone is watching T.V. when the phone rings. The babysitter jumps up to answer it. It was a man laughing. He hung up. He called back again telling the sitter that he would be there soon. The sitter didn't think much of it till he called back with the same message. She called the operated and complained. The operater told the sitter that if he called again to call her. The sitter agreed and hung up. The man called back saying he was coming. The sitter called the operator. The call was coming from a phone upstairs. The operator told the sitter to leave while she called the police. The sitter took the kids next door. When the police came they brought a man out of the house. He had some weird smile on his face. The Hook--- This tale is very old. It told a lot on high school and college campuses. You most likely will know it. A girl and her boyfriend are up on a hill at the edge of town. They turned on the radio and found some music. A bulletin wa read by the announcer. He said that a man with a hook in place of a hand had escaped from the state prison. The girl wanted to go home because the prison was npt far from where they were. So the boy started the engine. But before they left they heard a scratching noise. They drove off. When the girl got home the boy walked around the car to open her door. Handing off the door handle was a hook. The Girl Who Stood on a Grave--- This story is not just told in North America but in England as well. A girl was at a party. When they turned out the lights one of the boys dared her to go to the graveyard and stand on a grave. Being as brave as see was she said yes. The boy handed her a knife and told her after she stood on the grave to plung the knife into the grave so that they would know see was there. She took the knife and went her way. She reached the cemetary and picked a grave and stood on it. Then she took the knife and bought it down into the soil. Then, she began to walk away. But she couldn't something was holding her back! She screamed and fell to the ground. When the other kids found her the next day they saw they she had pinned her long skirt to the ground with her knife. She had died of fright.
Room for One More--- This tales is mostly told around the U.S. and the British Isles. A man was at home reading when a hearse filled with people drove up into his driveway. The man looked out the window and the driver said, "There's room for one more." The man stood his head in horror. The hearse disapeared. The next day at work the man waited for an elevator. One stopped and the doors opened. It was very crowded. One of the passagers called to him, "There's room for one more." the man said no thanks and walked away in fear. Then there was a huge crashing sound. The elevator he didn't get on to fell to the bottom of the shaft. Everyone on it died. The House Guests--- This story has been told in many places. Mostly in the New York region. A couple were driving home from a relatives. But it started to get late and they got tired. They saw a small house and the woman sugguest that they stop and ask if they rented rooms. They stopped and went to knock on the door. An old man and an old woman answered the door. They didn't rent rooms but said they would love to have the couple as their guests. The couple tried to give them money for their stay but the old man said he wouldn't take it. They all drank coffee together and then went to bed. The couple awoke the next morning before the older couple. They left an envelope with a thank you note and two ten dollar bills on a table next to the door. They left and stopped in the next town for breakfast. When they told the owner where they had stayed he was shocked. He told them that the house they had stayed in had burned down 5 months before and that the old couple that lived there died in the fire. The couple left and went back to the house. Like the owner had said in was a burned out shell. They stood staring at the ruins when the woman saw something. She screamed. Laying on a badly burned table next to the door was the envelope they had left that morning. |
